Last Day Hooray!

We decided to do a silly photo for our last one.  I will really miss this group of goofies!  I found our class this year to be so kind and compassionate towards each other and very hard workers.  I feel so blessed to be a teacher and lucky to have classes like this one to work with every day.  This week we had some fun; and some fun work.  On Monday we went outside to view nature using binoculars and magnifying glasses.  We then made nature prints and spent some time relaxing on blankets and reading.  On Field Day we were blessed with beautiful weather and a great program by Nickel City Reptiles.  Everyone enjoyed that, and some of our students were chosen to hold onto the boa constrictor!  (Not for me!)  On our last day we had  prayer service with some wonderfully uplifting songs led by the eighth graders.  It was  a great way to end our year.

We had to say goodbye to a few of our students.  They will both be going to other schools next year and we will miss them.  Maybe some of us will get together at the Monday summer play dates at Day Road Park.  I hope to show up at a few of them.  Don't forget to keep reading this summer.  The Lockport Library has a great summer program.  Keep practicing those math facts.  We worked so hard to learn them but if you don't use it- you lose it.  Thank you parents for entrusting your beautiful children to me and for your support throughout the year.  God bless.

The Play's the Thing!

We had a lot of fun this past week with our Fractured Fairytales. The students all did great and we appreciate our enthusiastic audiences.  Enjoy the photos below.

The first six photos show our pre-school buddies with us after watching the plays.  It was our final goodbye with them.  What a great year of reading and friendship!

This photo and the next four are from Spiderella.

This and the next three are from Aladdin and the Magic Pickle Jar.

These last ones are from Queen Midas.

This week we also cleaned out our desks and lockers, played some math games, made some origami, and watched a movie.  It was a busy end to our busy year.
Don't forget, on the last week of school we have 1/2 days on Monday and Wednesday and a whole day on Tuesday for Field Day.  Please remember to send in a water bottle on Tuesday and have your child wear sunscreen.

Some Fun!

We had a fun project today; the children decorated their "Summer Treasure Boxes".  They had fun adding paper, craft sticks, paint, glitter, and stickers to boxes that they will use to save any treasures that they collect this summer.  The boxes are perfect for seashells, pebbles, and postcards they might gather on vacation.  I tried to photograph them informally but as you can see from the rest of the photos, there was a lot of "photo-bombing" going on. :-)

In Math we finished up our measurement unit and continued with our geometry unit.  We will not have a formal test on chapter 12, I am using performance assessments.

The students are enjoying listening to Young Canaller by Gerry Stafford.  It is about life on the canal in Lockport, 1831.  We are discussing the contrast between life in Lockport then and now.
We had a nice surprise during our Math lesson on Thursday- Dr. Fike showed up at the door with cups of sherbet courtesy of Mr. Will from the cafeteria and Dr. Fike.  Thank you- if was a cool treat (and we since we were learning about 3-D shapes, we noticed it was shaped like a cylinder)!

Don't forget- next week the students can dress in gym uniforms all week long.

A Few More Photos

I love it when the students become the teachers!  This student shared an experiment that he did at home with us.  It had to do with positive or negative outbursts and its effect on the growth of mold.

The students view the results of the experiment.
This student shared a favorite book from home that she reads fluently.   These three photos were added after the post for this week.  If you did not yet view this week's posts, please scroll down.

This week we pretended it was summer and made s'mores in the microwave.  We noticed that the crackers were fourths, the chocolate piece was thirds and the marshmallow was a cylinder.  Math at work!

We are still learning about insects.  This week we read the book Butterfly Battles. I am a big fan of the Magic School Bus series.  The stories contain so much great science information.

In Religion we are reading about the Ten Commandments and the Great Commandment.  We try to remember to put them into practice daily.

We have started our end of year books by naming our favorite things about school and summer.  It will make a wonderful keepsake.

We worked with our 5th grade reading buddies to write digital stories about our experience.  I printed them off and sent them home this week.  Please ask your student if you have not seen it yet.

We are looking forward to hosting our parents and special friends at our end of year plays on June 18th from 9:30-10.  Please let me know if you will be coming.  The plays are really student-driven.  They designed the backdrops and they are bringing in things for props and costumes.  Thank you for helping with this.  If you did not receive an email about the plays, please let me know.   It means that I have the wrong email address for you.
One of our students shared his talent by playing Amazing Grace for us on his guitar.

Enjoy the beautiful weekend!
