Down on the Farm

We had a great time at our field trip to Kelkenberg Farms!  The weather cooperated and everyone learned a lot about all sorts of living things.
The farmer's wife, Mrs. Kelkenberg, had us all calling out to Farmer Kelkenberg and other helpers.

It was hands on all day long starting in the poultry barn which also housed a few pot belly pigs.  The kids loved petting all of the animals.

Everyone is feeling the warmth of the incubator.  One of the chicks hatched just before we got there and we named it after one of our own students whose birthday it was today.

Th
Farm Helper Rhonda tells us all about the chicks, hens, roosters, ducks, turkeys, and pheasants.

The birthday boy sports a rooster on his head!
All of us with Farmer Kelkenberg.

We had fun taking a hay ride through the fields.

We spent a little time in the BIG sandbox.

All of the children go to ride the ponies.  Click on the photo if you want to enlarge it.

Finally... photos!

I can't stand how bare our blog has looked without photos!  I finally located a cord for my camera so below you can view weeks of photos all at once.  Have fun!

To learn about the butterfly life cycle we used stamps to make pictures and then labeled each stage.

We are playing a butterfly game that teaches us the different stages in the butterfly metamorphosis.

This is a good shot of an adult butterfly and one still in its chrysalis.
Always finding ways to practice our math facts- Addition Bingo.

Making our patriotic kites for Memorial Day.

This was taken during a guided reading group- not sure why.  The expressions were so cute I had to post it.
Our finished "Best Day of School" books.  I hope you enjoyed reading them.

Another random guided reading shot.

The morning work for "Best Day of School Ever"- weaving.

Mrs. Badura joined us for snack guidance that day and taught us about personal space.

A sad note on the "Best Day", we had to let the butterflies go.  Each child was able to stir them up before letting them go.  I gave everyone an origami butterfly to keep so they could remember ours.

Our Religion work was painting a Bible story.

For the "Best Day" we voted to learn about volcanoes.  This was fun!

The students wanted to practice counting coins and telling time more so we did money centers...

and time on the ipads.

Another money activity.

For reading we had fun doing animal plays.  What a great day the students had planned!

The next photos are of our recent book project.  The students really showed a lot of creativity!

This was way back in April when we learned about making maple syrup and had a taste test with sap and syrup.
In the next few photos we used centers to practice counting coins.  This is a website on the computer.
Here we are playing a game called "Rolling in the Money".

This is a money game where we use a cash register/calculator to add our coins and "purchase" items.
In these photos we learned about the body parts of an insect by making our own models using playdoh.

This student made his own insect with 3 body parts, 6 legs, and antennae.

We had a great time with our Junior Achievement volunteer in April!

Other news: We have had our last reading and spelling test!  We will still do guided and group reading but we will not have any more weekly reading tests.

Enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend!
